Signs of Storm Damage After a Coastal Storm

The week after a storm is the most important week for your roof. Damage that is caught fast can usually be repaired. Damage that sits — even for a few weeks — turns into deck rot, attic moisture, mold, and interior damage that costs many times more to fix.

What to look for from the ground

You do not need to get on the roof to do an initial assessment. From your yard, look for:

  • Missing shingles — bare patches on the roof line
  • Curled, lifted, or cracked shingles
  • Granules in the gutters or downspouts
  • Bent or displaced flashing around chimneys, vents, or valleys
  • Damaged ridge cap shingles along the roof peak
  • Tree branches resting on the roof

What to look for inside the house

  • New water stains on ceilings or upper walls
  • Damp insulation in the attic
  • Daylight visible through the roof deck from the attic
  • Musty smell in upper-floor rooms

Hail damage is sneaky

Hail damage often does not look dramatic from the ground. It is small impact marks that break the shingle granules and expose the asphalt underneath. The roof keeps working — for a while — but the lifespan has been cut significantly. A trained eye catches hail damage that an untrained eye misses entirely.
